Unlike most brands scaling down their fashion shows during the pandemic, Vetements presented a massive Fall 2021 Menswear collection totaling in 165 looks that made several political statements while keeping its unconventional composure.
Starter looks were accompanied by a fiery, smoky backdrop and included an anarchist symbol replaced with a “V” marked on a model’s body, a masked model wearing a shirt with “THINK WHILE IT’S STILL LEGAL”, lightning strikes, signs of going against the mainstream and an overall theme that screams punk chic. There are also tones of The Matrix, inspiration from underground movements and Vetements’ agenda of creating a message with their designs.
The next part of the collection has a more approachable tone with models donning Red Bull and Coca-Cola cans, a “Hello, my name is” tag, references to fruits and veggies, and more options to wear in public without receiving smug looks. This would be considered the more “moderate” segment of the collection with a cheeky t-shirt stating “I like long walks and sex before marriage” poking fun at conservative views.
As the collection progresses, Vetements creates a more polished, upbeat atmosphere by changing the background to resemble something heaven-like and presenting pops of color. There are more looks paying homage to the 80s, while still maintaining the label’s underground, street style.
