Everyday Fashion with Neels Visser

START body

Neels Visser knows a thing or two about fashion. He started modeling at a time when everyone generally looks their worst (14 years of age), and quickly parlayed that into corporate fashion campaigns, European runways, and Maybelline New York’s first male ambassadorship. In that time Visser says he’s had a handful of frightening fashion moments, telling CR MEN: “at times I’ve been so confused at what people think they can put onto the human body.” Nevertheless, he pulled through, and—between vlogging and running his own business—he still has sartorial wisdom to share with the world.

What’s a questionable item of clothing you’ve purchased in the past?
“A few years ago I bought a Haider Ackerman blouse. It was bright, bright yellow—definitely made for women, and it cost a lot of money, too. At checkout I was like, ‘Am I about to spend a bunch of money on a girl’s blouse?’ But it looked sick when I put it on, so I got it, and I wear it all the time now. “

What about recent fashion regrets?
“One time I wore fur Gucci loafers in full snow. I had fallen asleep at my friend’s house (I wasn’t planning on sleeping there, it just kind of happened), and the next morning, when I went outside to catch my Uber, I realized it had snowed literal feet over night. The streets were covered in snow, and I was in the worst outfit—I was wearing those Gucci slides but also shorts and a T-shirt. I ran out to the car, but the shoes didn’t live to see afterward.”

How has your own sense of style evolved throughout the years?
“I used to try to conform to the styles and trends going on in the industry. But now—having worked for some time now—I know what my basics are and what looks good on me always. I’ll implement what’s trending into that, but I won’t live by it. It’s stressful to care too much about what you wear.”

What’s an essential outfit for you from your own closet?
“Amiri black skinny jeans—I wear them every day—a graphic or band tee, and some cool sneakers: Jordans or Saint Laurent boots or something in between the two. My Louis Vuitton backpack is my everyday accessory—it’s like my bible. When I was younger I saw the bag and I thought it was such a nice looking piece for an entrepreneur to have, and since then I always wanted it but never could really afford it. When I finally could, it symbolized progress for me. Plus it’s also so perfectly made for me, I wouldn’t change it for anything else.”
