Nearly six months after taking creative control, Raf Simons’ Calvin Klein is beginning to take shape. His hotly-anticipated debut showing for the brand takes place this Friday, February 10th at 10am, but in the run-up to it, the designer has been dropping some pretty major hints about what we might be able to expect. It began last week with a slightly revamped brand logo (made in collaboration with Peter Saville of New Order and Joy Division album art fame), and continued over the past 24 hours with a gradual leak of his first ad campaign for CK’s American Classics range of indigo denim and white vests and briefs.
For anyone expecting Justin Bieber or Kendall Jenner—or in fact any of the twenty-odd celebrities from CK ads of seasons past—you’ll be disappointed. Simons has never been one to openly court famous faces, and that’s not about to change just because he’s landed at a house that’s previously relied heavily on such tactics to stir up controversy and hold the attention of a millenial audience. In Bieber and Jenner’s place, you’ll find mostly unknown traditional models wearing simple CK pieces, all photographed by Willy Vanderperre.
Framed within the context of some of Simons’ favorite pieces of art, a topless redhead kisses a male model in front of a graphic Andy Warhol print and in separate shots, models in white underwear linger as they gaze at work by Sterling Ruby, Dan Flavin, and Richard Prince. It’s a refreshingly new interpretation of what it means to be a CK boy or girl today, but there’s still enough bare skin to see that Raf is willing to play with the brand’s much-celebrated history of nudity. If 2016 Calvin was loud and sexy, Raf’s—so far—is leading to a quieter league of subtle sensuality.
