Beyond The Trend: Straw Hats

START

Straw hats are a summer staple that have provided sun protection for centuries. While its exact origins are unknown, the accessory’s fascinating history reaches back to early Asian civilizations, where conical, woven hats were worn to shield workers from the sun. Similarly, short-brimmed hats made early appearances in 15th century French manuscripts, and straw bonnets were all the rage for European women in the 1700s. The hat then went through many iterations: in the 1800s women wore floppy numbers decorated with ribbon, and in the mid-19th century the straw boater hat became a premiere sporting style. By the 1910s the lightweight accessory was a go-to sun guard, and its various forms are still popular today. Here, CR explores the straw hat trend.
