Valentino Muses Throughout History

START

In the illustrious space of couture, no house embodies the evolving beauty of femininity quite like Valentino. Born in 1932 in northern Italy, Valentino Garavani found an undying interest in fashion before completing elementary school. He eventually followed his passion to Paris, studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne before pursuing apprenticeships across the city. In 1960, Valentino left Paris and opened his own atelier in Rome. Throughout his rise to fashion fame, Valentino forged his house’s identity through meticulously tailored couture gowns in timelessly feminine cuts, particularly in a bright cherry shade that quickly became known as Valentino Red. Although Valentino himself retired in 2008, appointing Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli to succeed him, the house’s iconic gowns continue to evolve and dominate the industry, now under the sole creative direction of Piccioli. CR looks at the lineup of female powerhouses that inspired the couture mainstay.
