Any editor can tell you how many press releases they’re tasked with reading every single day. Truth be told, most of them aren’t that memorable, but every now and then, a particularly engaging one arrives in your inbox and your editorial interest is piqued. That was the case this morning with a new release from buzzy New York-based brand, Alyx. The label has been gaining traction after scoring a semifinalist nomination in last year’s LVMH Young Designer Prize and counts famous fans like Bella Hadid, who’s frequently photographed wearing it while out and about on the street.
Alyx’s new release isn’t anything groundbreaking, but it’s something that we can see ourselves easily incorporating à la Bella into our daily routine. It’s a one-off collaboration with Vans that was born out of mutual admiration between the two brand’s head designers, Alyx’s Matthew Williams and Vans’ Rian Pozzebon. Centered around three of the shoe giant’s most recognizable, chunky rubber soled styles—the OG Sk8-Hi, the OG Authentic, and the OG Style 36—the capsule is unisex and slated to launch online and at selected brick and mortar retailers later this month.
Like us, Williams cites a nostalgic fondness for Vans which began many years ago as the main motivation behind the collab: “Growing up in California, skating, Vans were a major part of my childhood,” the designer reflected in the press release. “It felt really natural and important to include them in the world of Alyx.”
Each of the three Vans styles on offer will be available in two color ways and feature subtle Alyx signatures—like embossed wording, graffiti writing, and logo laces—throughout. Ranging from 0 to 5 for a pair, you’ll find the full range at alyxstudio.com on May 22nd.
