As Chloé gears up for a fresh reinvention under the lead of new creative director, Natacha Ramsay-Levi, the house has announced its plans to reveal a state-of-the-art creative facility. Following similar openings by Saint Laurent and Dior in Paris, the house will reveal the new Chloé Maison during Couture Week in July of this year. The new building will be multi-purpose, but predominantly dedicated to conserving the house’s archives which span over sixty years. The building will also house a photo studio, showrooms, and an exhibition space. In addition, it will serve as the backdrop to all of Chloé’s runway shows moving forward.
The first exhibition at Chloé Maison will be dedicated to the photographer Guy Bourdin, who was a close friend of the house’s founder, Gaby Aghion. Bourdin practically had a monopoly on shooting Chloé after the house was first established in 1952 and continued to collaborate with its various head designers for the following twenty years. The sixties in particular are often considered as Chloé’s golden era; Under the auspices of Karl Lagerfeld, the house counted Jackie Kennedy and Bridget Bardot among its more famous clients. Other celebrated former creative directors include Phoebe Philo and Stella McCartney.
Aghion’s granddaughter will work in the Maison’s archive department, caring for her family legacy. When her grandmother first opened Chloé, it was revolutionary; at the time, it was the only luxury French fashion house that sold women’s ready-to-wear.
Chloé isn’t the only French institution taking an interest in fashion history. Fellow luxury house’s aside, France’s ministry of culture has announced that its building its own fashion archive by acquiring five pieces of designer clothing each year. Plans are also in place for a government-sponsored “Fashion Forum” event, which aims to bring together the industry’s most powerful players to collaborate and strategize on special projects for the future.
Maison Chloé will be located next to the house’s headquarters on Avenue Percier in Paris’ 8th Arrondissement.END
