Cai Lee was only seven years old when she got bit by the modeling bug. Her mom hired a photographer to take photos of her whilst they were living in Orlando, Florida and she was an instant natural. Now 18, Cai’s dream of a life in front of the lens is finally coming true. In the space of a year, she was scouted by model agent whilst kicking it in her hometown, moved to New York, and signed a contract with DNA Models. Her first booking was as an exclusive on Givenchy’s Spring Haute Couture runway, her second was for Baja East’s Fall 2016 New York Fashion Week show. Most recently, Carine tapped Cai for her Harper’s Bazaar beauty portfolio with legendary makeup artist, Peter Philips. Needless to say, we’re expecting big things from Cai:
What was your first memory of fashion?
“I’ve wanted to model since I was a little girl, so I guess my first memory is more related to that than actual fashion. My mom booked this photo shoot when I was seven and I just loved it. Ever since then I knew that modeling was definitely what I wanted to do.”
When did you get your first big break?
“When Riccardo Tisci booked me for the Givenchy show, I couldn’t believe it. He and his team are amazing. Right before the show, they cut my hair and gave me bangs. I’ve kept them ever since then because I feel like the they fit my face so well.”
What was the first runway show you walked in and what do you remember about it?
“That Givenchy show was my first time walking in a fashion show and I was so nervous. The actual runway had so many twists and turns. I was the only model begging them to let me practice walking it before showtime.”
What is your favorite modeling career moment so far?
“I know I keep saying the Givenchy show, but it really was such a huge deal for me. I’m never going to forget it. The show took place in Paris and I’d never left America before then. On the day of the show, my parents, my brothers, and my sisters were at home, live streaming the show online.”
Who are your role models?
“Raquel Zimmerman is my role model. The way she got to where she is in the modeling industry is so inspiring to me. She started from nothing and today, everyone knows who she is. I hope I can copy her in my career.”
What would people be surprised to know about you?
“Probably that I love to box. I know I don’t look like a boxer, but I box all the time. I first got involved in it when I was 16. I told my trainer that I wanted to be model so I needed to get my body into shape. After that, he took me under his wing and taught me everything. It’s also a really great stress reliever and can help you lose weight in a fun way.”
What’s your approach to healthy eating?
“I eat a lot of seafood. It’s really the bomb. I love fish, and I really, really love shrimp.”
Favorite beauty trick?
“I use a lot of Keri soap and cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is the best!”
What item of clothing couldn’t you live without?
“I have a fur coat from the label Venus that I couldn’t live without. Also, I love hats, so I my snapback caps and my beanies are essential to my life.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“I like to listen to hip-hop and rap music, especially from the ’90s. I also love to watch shows like Criminal Minds, because the actor Shemar Moore is my celebrity crush. I adore him.”
What would you do if you weren’t a model?
“I think I would be a famous boxer or one of those people on the show Storage Wars—they buy a bunch of old stuff, make it nice, and then they sell it again for more money.”
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
“In ten years time, I’ll be living in Colorado, California, or Hawaii, and flying to and from New York and Europe for every Fashion Week. I can picture myself walking for everyone: Dior, Chanel, Givenchy again, everyone!”END
