In March, Shayne Oliver sparked rumors of Hood By Air’s demise when he joined forces with Helmut Lang to design a capsule collection. Now, the cult brand has confirmed whispers of its shuttering—sort of. In a statement released this afternoon, Hood By Air’s co-founders Shayne Oliver and Leilah Weinraub announced that HBA is on hiatus, effective immediately.
According to the press release, Oliver and Weinraub want to take some time to work on solo projects. Weinraub is finishing an upcoming art installation titled “Shakedown” that’s slated to be included in an exhibition in New York and Oliver will focus solely on his responsibilities at Helmut Lang.
Although news of the break should come as no surprise to those who work in the industry, it will no doubt disappoint HBA’s loyal army of customers who’ve followed the brand since its start in New York in 2006. There’s no timeline on when Oliver and Weinraub intend to pick up things again creatively at HBA, so for now, fans will just have to keep their fingers crossed for when Oliver’s first drop with Helmut Lang debuts in September.
