Before Kristen Coffey was booked as an exclusive for Louis Vuitton Fall 2017, she was living in Atlantic City with her reggae-musician boyfriend, and hoping to make it as a model. Her prayers were answered earlier this year when a talent scout found her Instagram account and forwarded her photographs to her manager, who passed them onto IMG Models—the same agency that represents industry heavy hitters, like Bella and Gigi Hadid. As the ink on her contract was still drying, the agency flew Coffey to meet with Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière in Paris. Then and there she secured her first and only modeling gig to date. That’s all about to change, so meet Coffey:
Where are you from?
“I’m originally from a small town in southern New Jersey called Vineland. It’s a small farm town, with an even smaller town center. Now my boyfriend and I live right outside of Atlantic City. He’s in a reggae band called Sensamotion.”
How were you discovered?
“I was found on Instagram by a scout who saw my picture and sent it to my now manager, Caleb White. A month later, Caleb booked me a meeting with IMG and by the next morning I was in Paris meeting the whole team at Louis Vuitton.”
Were you nervous to walk for such a big brand for the first time?
“It was exciting, so I wasn’t nervous. Once I figured out what shoes I was wearing, I was set. I practiced my walk so many times, that by the moment it was my turn on the runway, I was confident and ready to go.”
What were you doing before you signed with IMG?
“I was doing odd jobs in and around Philadelphia and shooting small project with friends, biding my time and just hoping to get signed to a real modeling agency.”
Have you always been interested in fashion?
“Yes. I’m into styling and I love fashion. I find it fascinating how style is a way for people to express themselves, sometimes without even knowing that is what they’re doing.”
Who are some of your industry role models?
“I really admire Elsa Hosk. I think she’s really unique and cool and I’ve watched her career since the start. I aspire to be as great as her one day.”
How would you describe your personal style?
“I like to call it tomboy chic. I’m very into band t-shirts and skinny jeans with boots and leather. When I get dressed up, I’d compare my style to Kendall Jenner.”
Do you have a favorite beauty trick?
“Fresh aloe vera. It cools any breakout down and really helps my skin to heal. Sometimes I scoop out the gel from an aloe plant, blend it all up and keep it in the fridge to use over the course of a few days.”
What’s the most surprising thing about you?
“Usually the most surprising thing about me is my age. People don’t tend to believe that I’m 25.”
What’s your favorite place in the world and why?
“Paris. Flying there for the Louis Vuitton show was my first time traveling outside of America, so I feel like I need to go back as soon as possible. There’s still so much there for me to see.”
What are your hobbies?
“I love to bake and I love to travel.”
What’s your baking specialty
‘I’ve always been really good at making banana bread. I’ve made it so many times for my best friend, because it’s her favorite thing in life. In the beginning you follow recipes, but the more you bake, the more you begin to pick up on measurements just by tasting the mixture.”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“Hopefully I’ll be achieving great success as a model.”END
