Newly appointed Creative Director, Matthew M. Williams premiered his first live show experience with Givenchy’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection. Filled with the designer’s signature utility aesthetic, the collection was balanced with a palette of spring colors and romantic silhouettes, an experimental combination that showcased Williams’ vision of what he aims to make the future of the French luxury fashion house.
Incorporating the work of American artist, John Smith, Williams weaves a sartorial interpretation of past and future Givenchy. As several knitwear, logo, and motif pieces don the artist’s signature imagery of a groovy grim reaper and recent artwork from his gallery show, “Emo Jungle,” Williams use of Smith’s colorful palette accentuates Givenchy’s traditional dark colorway.
Offering silhouettes designed with a utilitarian and luxury mixture, the SS22 collection emphasizes the contrast between extravagance and discipline. The collection features layered looks designed with traditional masculine tailoring textures, Napa leather, neoprene, and mohair wools. Romantic elements were celebrated throughout the womenswear as structured neoprene corset tops gave way to delicate pleated peplum ruffles and evening gowns were detailed with sheer veiled bottoms. Elsewhere, menswear showcased William’s affinity for luxury streetwear with raw-edged fishing vests alongside leather coats and baseball caps. Much of the exquisite layered tailoring and leather accenting is also reminiscent of Williams’ time with Alyx Studios.
Footwear and accessories were notable pieces in the collection as Williams debuted several fresh silhouettes including fully knitted sneakers, contemporary leather clogs, and thigh-skimming platform boots. While certain jewelry had ruffled controversy amongst the press due to similarities to a noose design, the collection also featured the Kenny bag—which first premiered on Kendall Jenner at the Met Gala—and chunky statement rings that balanced the heavy utilitarian aesthetic.
The collision of tradition and experimentation made for an interesting combination in this collection and offered a promising glimpse into the artistry of Williams and his quest to redefine the look of Givenchy.END
