Eerie nostalgia enveloped the moon-clad attendance at Marine Serre‘s film showing in Le Marais. As opposed to a classic runway layout, the young French designer took a cinematic approach in debuting her Spring/Summer 2022 collection. Mannequins donning featured looks were dramatically spotlighted whilst the real show occurred on screen.
In collaboration with Sacha Barbin and Ryan Doubiago, Serre’s film featured a patchwork of scenes depicting a mismatched family’s rural, remote, and cultish lifestyle. From robotically crushing berries to eating with branded handkerchiefs covering their heads, the characters of Ostal24 (which means “Maison 24” in Occitan) were both chilling and familiar.
Pigmented, lustrous film is soundtracked by calming nature sounds and a thriller score alike. Contrast remained prevalently thematic throughout, as the scenes alternated from peaceful to sinister. In the kitchen, models tinkered with silverware and sported earrings of broken forks or necklaces of dangling spoons. Within the bedroom, they danced in morph suits of Serre’s signature loud prints. Inside the car, intricate crochet enveloped passengers, the dashboard, and steering wheel. Plus, we can’t forget the ominous flour shower and impassioned cleansing at the finale.
As for the woven-in looks, matching was ubiquitous. Feminine ensembles had a masculine counterpart for nearly each design, from pink denim to color-blocked leather. Tablecloths and vintage-appearing embroidery were not only found on the strange house’s furniture, but the collection itself. In pure Sound of Music fashion, Serre effortlessly painted a picture of the film’s characters having created their clothing from towels and drapes.
Upcycling truly was a mainstay in this season’s collection, as 90 percent of the total materials were either recycled or regenerated. Officially Marine Serre’s most sustainable release yet.
“The most important thing for me is what people feel when they see Ostal24 rather than what they think,” stated Serre. “Fashion is about more than draping fabric and making a profit, it can be a place where we are free to take meaningful action.”
