With American fashion’s consistent appropriation of Eastern design, Kim Shui flips the Western gaze on its head playing into ideas of Western fantasy. For her Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Shui creates an Eastern view of Americana.
A year of chaos and tragedy shed light on the injustices plaguing America and around the world since its beginning. With societies eyes opening, stuck at home unable to look away, calls for change rang to be answered by facades of reform in tokenism and woke-washing. With Asian-Americans at the forefront of abuse and discrimination during the pandemic, Shui prioritized representing the diversity within the Asian community avoiding only featuring East-Asian faces and by casting models who were full, half, and only partially Asian. The whole spectrum was included, as well as models of other races and a range of body types. Amongst the cast of models was rapper, Azealia Banks, who closed the show.
Shui played into Western clichés, like cowboy hats and boots, reinventing the imagery in a campy way. She paired the accessories with designs and silhouettes drew from her own Chinese heritage: high necklines with delicate buttons crossing over the chest and intricate dragon designs on fabrics. Cut out dresses, see through mesh, micro skirts and crops tops brought an elevated but fun allure and sexiness to the collection, under Shui’s terms. The pieces consisted of warm vibrant florals on sheer light fabrics and leather snake skin in bright blues.
The show presents itself as a melting pot of cultures, a true depiction of what young Asian woman look like, and how they want to be seen. Shui’s collection embodies strength, beauty, resilience all while having a good time.
