Set in the lush landscape of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Ulla Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection provides a breath of fresh air and a moment of calm in the hustle and bustle of New York Fashion Week.
Strings and wind instruments filled the warm air, mixing with the ambient lull of nature. Sunlight cascaded upon the mirrored runway. The modern metal backdrop cut into the skyline, allowing a peak at a manicured lawn and vibrant foliage. A circular bed of wildflowers overflowed acting as a centerpiece. The gardens provided a perfect location to compliment Johnson’s designs.
All Johnson’s usual femme tropes came into play from frills to embroidery and appliqué to intricate floral prints. A color palette of warm neutrals, army green, purple pastels, and dusty blues beckoned for spring. Sweet empire waist slip-style dresses made of organza floated down the runway. Though, a lot of new elements sprinkled into the mix. Silhouettes lent more asymmetrical through hems, necklines, and draping. The designer dabbled in traditionally masculine silhouettes this season with a ribbed knit button-down tank and pant set in addition to a whimsical cotton pajama set.
Providing a moment of solace for the perfect mid-morning NYFW spectacle, Johnson brought her greatest hits to the table while implementing fresh takes.
