The past year has been defined by duality. As a result of the chaos caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a near-constant contrast between the fear and depression wrought by the virus and lockdown, and the hope and joy at the prospect of returning to normalcy. This is a sentiment that Bottega Veneta creative director Daniel Lee aptly encapsulates in the brand’s Fall/Winter 2021 collection.
The 61 look collection features a divergent, yet cohesive mixture of austere and extravagant ensembles. The first half consists of a range of dark suits, dresses, boots, and accessories, with a few suits covered in bright feathers sprinkled in. However, the latter half stands in stark contrast to this serious tone. Specifically, it sees a host of brightly colored garments and accessories traipse down the runway, evoking a sense of unbridled joviality. Perhaps the best reflection of this sentiment are the vibrant fringed fur coats that stand out not only as a result of their striking colors, but more so because of their incredible volume.
The opposing visual elements of this collection undoubtedly speak to our past, present, and future experiences with this complicated virus. Thus, with finely crafted pieces and thoughtful designs, Lee and his team continue to not only showcase their impressive creativity, but also hold a mirror up to these complex and complicated times.
