What is fashion week if it isn’t filled with a sartorial grand scheme? Well, LaQuan Smith is here to put that question to rest this New York Fashion Week. On September 9 the designer will walk his Spring/Summer 2022 runway collection throughout the Empire State Building, making it the first fashion show to take place in the landmark’s 90-year-old history. And, considering the show will present from the building’s lobby all the way to its observatory deck (the building will shut down for the day), it definitely won’t look like the typical runway.
While this location is one to jot down in the list of most iconic fashion week runway venues, it also hits home to Smith who was born and raised in Queens, New York (Smith’s whole branding is also wholehearted, his inspiration stemming from his grandmother). The Empire State Building’s V.P. of branding also noted the occasion’s speciality, especially because it will show the creations of a native New Yorker. This will also be Smith’s first show since the pandemic and the first collection to present itself outside of Spring Studios.
This year’s showcase is undoubtedly a distinctive moment for Smith’s career, but it wouldn’t be the first. Debuting at 21-years-old, Smith’s feminine favored designs and silhouettes have skyrocketed in fashion, especially in the celebrity style realm where Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, the Kardashian-Jenners, and Hailey Bieber have worn his pieces. He also has collaborations with denim brand Levi’s and BMW under his belt.
It won’t be long until Smith’s collection takes over the Big Apple and it’ll be an anticipated collection right in line with the Empire State of Mind.
