Fashion designer Matty Bovan releases BOVAN Butterfly FC with contributions from artists, family, and friends.
“I wanted to explore the classic football shirt idea, but to impose an image of one onto a T-shirt, using screenprinting. I tie dyed loads of different T-shirts and then printed over them, with some featuring butterfly and text. Each shirt is unique having been hand screen-printed in York in our studio, in a variety of sizes and styles. I then sent them out to friends across the globe to customize in exchange for an image of them wearing the resulting garment,” the Central Saint Martins graduate explains.
The designer won the 2021 International Woolmark Prize. “Praised for his technically advanced stunning jacquard weave designs, unique style, intricate designs which tell a story, advanced understanding of both knit and weave techniques, strong color combinations and sustainable approach to local sourcing and production, Bovan’s sensibility and conceptual approach to fashion impressed the judges,” the Woolmark International foundation said of the winning artist.
The gallery of images below forms his latest fourty-four page zine, Bovan Butterfly FC Zine, produced in a limited edition of 60 copies, 50 of which come in a twenty page colouring book and zine bundle enclosed in a special edition BOVAN mailer bag.
Bovan Butteryfly FC is comprised of pastel and fluorescents and custom one-off vinyl screen-printed, hand-dyed T-shirts, T-shirt Dresses, joggers, and sweats.
