“The only reason I’m in fashion is to destroy the word ‘conformity'” Vivienne Westwood, the British designer who shook the sartorial world with her provoking, unconventional mentality, once said. Now, after 50 years as a fashion label and 40 years residing on the runway (and coinciding with Westwood’s 80th birthday), Vivienne Westwood is publishing a book that envelopes the ingenuity of the house’s voguish sphere.
Vivienne Westwood Catwalk is a thorough encapsulation of Vivienne Westwood and long-time collaborator Andreas Kronthaler’s collections for the house since its 1981 runway debut. Showcasing 1,300 looks from over 70 collections styled by Westwood, original catwalk photography, words written by fashion writer and critic Alexander Fury, and biographies written by Westwood and Kronthaler, the book trails Vivienne Westwood’s legacy. Bound in a pink and blue Westwood MacAndreas tartan (an influential design crafted for the Fall/Winter 1993 collection, Anglomania) – the limited edition exclusively sold through Vivienne Westwood holds bright pink edged pages and ribbon markers and comes in a MacAndres tartan slip – the book is an ode to the house and its namesake designer from front to back. To this day, Vivienne Westwood’s punk aesthetic and provocative yet eccentric attitude still holds influence and its groundbreaking designs still ring true, of course including Westwood’s signature tartan.
