Nowadays, it’s hard to find an image of a runway without a sea of phones scattered throughout the audience recording every move. Although the endless photos and crowds of celebrities and photographers at shows now feels like a distant memory, fashion strangely seems more digital than ever before. Or so we thought…
In his almost three years at the house, Creative Director Daniel Lee has developed a modern presence at Bottega Veneta by drumming to his own beat while also interpreting iconic house codes in a whole new light. For the brand’s Spring/Summer 2021 season, Lee took things in an entirely different direction than other shows of the season who opted for virtual presentations via film or video game. Early in October, Bottega Veneta presented its Spring/Summer 2021 collection at Sadler’s Wells Theater in London under complete secrecy. Two small and socially distant shows were held composed of industry editors and celebs alike. In a “Vote Kanye” oversized hoodie, North West and her father Kanye West sat next to English rapper Skepta and his daughter River for a family affair fashion show.
The looks followed a vintage feel in the form of ’60s crocheted pieces, boxy ’70s shaping, and ’80s two-piece suiting. However the star of the show were the knits. Lee artfully translated the brand’s woven leather symbol into knitted pieces that carry this same aesthetic. Accessories were no afterthought, Lee upped the ante with his knits creating delicate knitted pouch bags alongside knit pieces answering all our cottagecore dreams.
