Today, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced the winners of its 2020 Fashion Awards. Originally scheduled for Monday, June 8, the gala ceremony, like countless other fashion events, was unable to proceed normally due to the global COVID-19 outbreak and was delayed indefinitely. However, recognizing the gravity of continuing to honor the best talents in fashion, the CFDA ultimately decided to go digital with its award ceremony. Designer and Chairman of the CFDA Tom Ford announced the winners in a recorded video that premiered on the CFDA’s new digital and social platform, Runway360. The awards were unveiled on the second day of a highly-anticipated New York Fashion Week, which has been shortened to run for only four days.
“The winners this year will join an elite roster of some of the most talented American fashion designers to have ever lived,” declared Ford.
Forgoing an in-person gala prompted the CFDA to pivot its programming to prioritize supporting fashion designers amidst an ongoing global epidemic. As such, for this year only, the award show eschewed naming the CFDA honorees and focused exclusively on honoring designer nominees. In addition, the CFDA 2020 Fashion Awards also concentrated on “redirecting [its] efforts towards scholarships and bringing racial equity to fashion,” according to Ford’s opening remarks.
The digital ceremony also marks the first CFDA Fashion Award for each designer in the four American categories, as well as two new categories–International Women’s and Men’s Designer of the Year. This year’s roster of winners represents the most diverse group of recipients in the CFDA’s 39-year history. Three of the four American Designer of the Year awards winners are people of color.
In tandem with the winners’ announcement, the CFDA also released the list of recipients of the 2020 CFDA Scholar Awards. This year, the scholarship program increased its student awards to 5,000 across seven eligible scholarships.
