In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and the massive economic toll it has taken on the fashion industry, Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele “felt the need to raise a hand and speak up.”
Michele made many game-changing announcements at a recent press conference, one of which confirms the luxury brand’s switch to two coed shows a year instead of five, likely in the fall and spring. This decision confirms hints given by Michele on social media that the brand would be breaking away from the traditional fashion schedule, joining Saint Laurent’s departure and opting for a season-less structure. “I love looking at the past, but to be productive in the present,” Michele said.
It was decided in March that Milan Men’s Fashion Week, which normally takes place in June, will merge with women’s shows during the week of September 22 to 28. However, Michele has also said that Gucci will not be ready to present a collection in September as usual, and will show at a later date. According to Michele, the lockdown in Italy, which began in February, has allowed the Gucci team to slow down creatively, and rethink its place in the fashion industry. Michele has also reimagined the names of his collections, and decided to change them as inspired by classical music, which “[offers] the possibility of opening new horizons.”
On July 17, Gucci will digitally present what would traditionally be called a Cruise collection. The “story,” as Michele has deemed it, is titled Epilogue, and will purportedly peel back the curtains of what goes on behind the scenes at Gucci. This follows in the footsteps of Michele’s Fall/Winter 2020 ready-to-wear collection, which put seamstresses and designers center stage. Michele will show Epilogue on the final day of Milan Digital Fashion Week, slated to run from July 14 to 17.
All of these changes are in the name of progress, according to Michele. “I am not an expert of the industry and economy, but I feel I need to give myself some time and also to the many people working with us,” the designer said. “Rules make our lives easier but we need fresh oxygen.”END
