Perhaps it’s a product of hard work, or simply inherent, but at just 17 years old, there’s something about Shayna McNeill that is effortlessly wise beyond her years. The fresh face was scouted at her local farmers market in Calgary, Alberta several years ago and subsequently signed with IMG Models. Needless to say, things really haven’t been the same since.
Whirlwind would be an understatement to describe the rising star’s past year. She quickly earned a place on some of the top runways across the recent Fall/Winter 2020 fashion month–Tom Ford, Miu Miu, Valentino, and Max Mara to name a few. On top of a stellar season, McNeill has become a muse of Riccardo Tisci’s Burberry. She was featured in the label’s Fall/Winter 2019 campaign and on the catwalk during London Fashion Week, marking her third Burberry runway. With an impressive portfolio already under her belt, CR gets to know the up-and-coming model in an exclusive interview.
Did you always imagine yourself as a model?
“I definitely did not always imagine myself modeling. I was always a lanky little kid and made fun of at school ’cause I wasn’t the classic pretty girl.”
You’ve quickly earned a spot on some of the top runways during fashion month. What advice would you give someone pursing a modeling career?
“I would say stay genuine because if you aren’t genuine to who you are as a person people can see through it very quickly. Also, don’t get discouraged. There’s a lot of ups and downs and I do think just staying positive about everything and always trying to improve is super important. Positive energy attracts positive outcomes.”
What is your favorite thing to do off the runway?
“This is kind of a basic answer, but hanging out with friends and family for sure. Other than that, I love photography, so taking photos in whatever crazy city I am traveling in and exploring museums because I’m super interested in art history. I just went to the V&A in London and loved that.”
What has been a major highlight since you started modeling?
“Working with Burberry and shooting [its] campaigns with Nick Knight, a photographer I’ve always really admired, was insane. I loved that experience. Also doing fashion month. That was pretty crazy because it was something I aspired to do when I started modeling. Being able to go to every city was definitely a major highlight.”
What are five things we’ll never find you without?
“Lip balm, definitely. My lips get so dry, so I carry around a thousand with me; a good book; I feel like my phone is kind of a necessary one, can’t be without your phone; a camera, whether it be my film or digital camera depending on what I am doing; probably my crystals, I carry them with me always.”
Positive energy always!
“Yes, we gotta have that with us all the time.”
