Kanye West’s return to fashion month came as a surprise, as the rapper announced the runway show and Sunday Service just days ago. Known for their convergence of music, performance art, and fashion, West’s runway shows are an experience unlike any other. In 2015, deviating from the norm of a typical runway show, West and Italian performance artist Vanessa Beecroft casted a diverse set of models, some off the streets of New York, to present the nude and khaki color palette of his fashion debut. From then on, the rapper has continued to make his mark on the fashion industry with innovative shoe designs and muted clothes one can only associate with Yeezy.
For Yeezy Season 8, West relocated to Paris, going halfway across the globe just to give the audience a taste of his family’s home in Cody, Wyoming. Show invitations were accompanied by a dozen rattlesnake eggs and dried lavender from the West’s ranch. Models walked out from beyond a mountainous sculptural mound, in the signature solemnity of Yeezy runway shows, with slow, stiff struts to the sounds of car horns and street noise–seemingly a far cry from his Great Plains home. Matted fur pants and jackets in white, hoodies that nearly masked the entire face, and a booted remix of the Yeezy 700 v3 made their way down the runway.
The presentation of the collection itself was short, but a surprise performance from the rapper’s oldest daughter, North West, had the audience cheering. As she solidified her place as a future pop star, the models returned to the runway, this time in the familiar militant formation of West’s shows, followed by West himself. As he stood behind North with the grin of a proud father, his designs became his backdrop. With all the performance and streetwear one could hope for, the return of Yeezy was, in many aspects, triumphant.END
