Balenciaga recently released a dystopian newscast from the future in the form of its Spring/Summer 2020 campaign video. Mimicking an evening news broadcast, the clip satirizes the many current political issues. It features several models dressed as news anchors, wearing the brand’s seasonal clothing, from relaxed windbreakers to wide-shouldered dresses. Launched for a network dubbed “BLNCG Live,” headlines include “Planets Realign,” “No More Traffic Jams,” and “Where Is The Water Going?” with an electronic soundtrack by Wolf Eyes.
The models’ mouths are animated to imitate speech, adding an eerie effect to the dystopian news broadcast as it hints at climate change and the future of politics. Throughout the video comes shots of a solar eclipse with onlookers wearing Balenciaga shades, pedestrians crossing the street in the Spring/Summer 2020 collection, and nightmarish B-roll such as water sinking into a black hole-like spillway. Key items from Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2020 collection also appear, such as the Hello Kitty handbag.
On par with Artistic Director Demna Gvasalia’s proclivity for the bizarre and dystopian, the campaign video aligns with the luxury house’s Spring/Summer 2020 runway show, where models walked to a haunting musical mix while in a severe all-blue room.
