Industrialism is at the center of the 6 Moncler 1017 Alyx 9SM collection, out today. The last of Moncler Genius’ lineup of collaborations for 2019 to 2020, the Matthew Williams-designed collection presents outerwear with an urban edge.
Each Moncler Genius collection has been a dynamic fusion between the brand and designer. Other collaborators include Richard Quinn, Pierpaolo Piccioli, Simone Rocha, and Craig Green. With Williams, the designer brings his bold, masculine eye to the men’s styles–although as with 1017 Alyx 9SM’s line, the clothes can be worn by anyone. Living and working in Italy, where both Moncler and 1017 Alyx 9SM are produced, Williams’ eye for detail has translated to the substantial lineup of modular outerwear, tech-wear, and accessories.
Bringing 1017 Alyx 9SM’s signature luxury streetwear meets subculture aesthetic to the Italian fashion house, Williams incorporated utilitarian details throughout the collection. Parkas, puffers, vests, and other layers are bound with hardware and functional details such as chains, hooks, and buckles. Taping and exposed stitching also adds to the raw, industrial feel. Base-layer tights and tops are made from nylon produced from waste materials, addressing Williams’ commitment to sustainable design. The moody black and graphite palette of the outerwear collection is punctuated by Moncler’s signature cherry red, a bright orange, and stark white.
1017 Alyx 9SM’s edgy treatment of leather is also included in the collection. Bonded leather jackets appear layered with tech-wear shells and basics, showing how athletic styles are increasingly taking over ready-to-wear fashion.
