Alessandro Michele’s latest Gucci show opened with models standing on a conveyer belt-like runway in a series of bleak white garments, some resembling straitjackets with leather straps. The Spring/Summer 2020 collection that followed displayed the familiar Gucci over-the-top look, with color blocking, pattern play, sequins, and texture abound. A new crop of covetable accessories was also featured, with a hard twist. Along with crop whips and latex gloves–which almost erred on the equestrian side rather than BDSM among the bourgeois-minded fashion–were leather gloves and an an ankle monitor-like accessory, which were lined with gold bullets of Gucci lipstick, adding an authoritarian edge to the retro-inspired collection. Upon closer realization, the piece is actually a new, mini bag from the brand (with a removable chain) that can be worn on the ankle or even as a cuff.
Anklets have made a comeback in recent years, and Michele’s take on the trend expresses a more pointed perspective. Acknowledging the world of surveillance we live in, especially the one in which the fashion world operates where Instagram and social media domineer trends, the ankle monitor becomes high fashion commentary–especially when armed with lipstick bullets.
When considering the straitjackets, whips, and bullet-holstering pieces in Gucci’s show, discipline was an undercurrent of the collection. Wrapped up in pretty clothes and luxe details, the accessories brought the subversive edge to Gucci that Michele has become so deft at.
