Two years ago, Hanna Halvorsen was scouted by her agent while she was on vacation with her family in Paris. At only 16 years old, this chance meeting with French photographer Cynthia Frebour would launch Halvorsen’s career in modeling that would whisk her away from her small hometown in Norway.
“I was really surprised,” she tells CR. “I never pictured myself doing this, but it was an opportunity. I didn’t know the industry at all.”
Now, the fresh-faced, bright-eyed Scandinavian beauty has walked in the Miu Miu Resort 2018 show, she’s modeled for Chanel’s showroom, and for the first time in her life, she’s in New York City to sight-see and to land more modeling gigs. She stopped by the CR office to tell us what she loves about the city, what she would be doing if she wasn’t pursuing modeling, and what it was like to walk in Miu Miu.
You’re in New York City for the first time. What do you think of the city so far?
I’m here for a month, and it’s really exciting. It’s such a big city. So far, I’ve been to Central Park and Brooklyn. There’s so much to do. I want to see the local stuff and all the attractions. I love the views from the rooftops. I come from a really small city in Norway with 15,000 people, so it’s crazy to see so many different people. I love the diversity. I think it’s really cool.
How did you start modeling?
I was on vacation with my family in Paris two summers ago, and my mother agent—Cynthia Frebour—just stopped me. She’s a French photographer, and she connected me to Mademoiselle, an agency in Paris, and DNA in New York.
Did you know you wanted to model?
Never. I was really surprised. I never pictured myself doing this, but it was an opportunity. I was back and forth about it at first, because I didn’t know the industry at all—it’s not big at home. I didn’t know if this was for me. But after talking to my friends and family, I decided to try it out to see if I would like it. And so far, I’ve met so many great people. I’m really happy.
Were your parents encouraging?
Not at first because they’re very protective. It’s a whole new world, so they want me to be careful. They’re supportive now.
What would you be doing if you weren’t modeling?
I’m into science, math, and physics, so I would probably be continuing my studies. I might actually continue while I model at the same time. I’ve always wanted to be a scientist, but I haven’t found exactly which area just yet. I just love science.
You walked in Miu Miu last year. What was that like?
It was my first show. It was really exciting, but scary as well. I was a little nervous, but at the same time, I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t have time to get nervous because it happened so fast.
Is there anything surprising you learned about the industry?
I never thought of everything that goes behind a runway shoot or behind a shoot. There’s so much preparation behind the scenes. Now I know there are so many people working together. There’s been a lot of surprises.
