Longchamp’s Le Pliage handbag has had quite a history in its relatively young livelihood. From the chic mademoiselles of early 90s Paris to the suburban teenyboppers parading about strip malls of today, the fold up bag—with its trapezoidal shape and nylon canvas body—has been one of the most commercially successful fashion items of its kind, catching the eyes of everyone from Alexa Chung to Jeremy Scott. Now the often-deemed “basic” bag gets a new life in an unexpected, upcoming collaboration with Shayne Oliver.
Known for subverting expectations (take any Hood by Air fashion show or his stint at Helmut Lang to reference), the cult-favorite New York designer New York joined forces with the longstanding French leather house to create a capsule collection of subversive travel gear and ready-to-wear fashion pieces. “Realness,” a HBA relic and nod to NYC’s underground queer community, decorates oversized plush pink pieces, while “hiatus,” is perhaps an update to the designer’s own line itself, whose most recent fashion show was shown for Spring 2017 during New York Fashion Week. Other pieces continue Oliver’s sportswear memorabilia and play on proportion, connotation, and gender.
“I really like the idea of working with brands that are masters of their craft,” the designer said in a statement. “Longchamp has a prestigious history of providing luxury travel essentials with expert craftsmanship. It made total sense to work with them on my first all accessories project.”
Longchamp by Shayne Oliver launches May 4, 2018 in select Longchamp stores and online.
