Eckhaus Latta and eight other young creatives have been announced as finalists for the LVMH 2018 prize.
Each year, the luxury giant gives a 300,000-euro grant and a 12-month period of financial and technical support to a young designer. This year, LVMH narrowed 1,300 entries from 90 countries down to 20 semi-finalists, who showed their collections to a panel of industry judges in Paris on March 1 and 2, 2018.
The resulting selection of nine designers represents the progressive and diverse direction of fashion, a third of which identify their brands as gender neutral: Doublet, by Tokyo-based designer Masayuki Ino; French designer Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and NYC-based designer Matthew Adams Dolan. A favorite of Rihanna for all-things denim, Dolan has earned a reputation for his avant-garde tailoring and utilitarian approach to design.
In the realm of combined women’s and menswear collections, Eckhaus Latta has accrued buzz over its signature brand of wearable basics with unconventional twists. In another dimension, British designer Charles Jeffrey’s collections burst with color and a smorgasbord of silhouettes and textures draped liberally across all models under his label, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy.
Menswear labels A-Cold-Wall, by Samuel Ross; Botter, by Rushemy Botter; and Lisi Herrebrugh represent distinct facets of men’s fashion. Botter and Herrebrugh have welded a refreshing spin on menswear—with pieces such as pinstriped suit jackets pushed off the shoulders of bomber jackets—while Ross has developed casual basics infused with a tint of symbolism and commentary toward the gritty realism of British culture.
Rounding out the finalists, womenswear designers Léa Dickely and Hung La of Kwaidan Editions came together in 2016, combining their passions for pattern-making and tailoring to create a portfolio of luxurious basics. Having trained under the keen eye of Phoebe Philo during her renowned tenure at Céline, Rok Hwang of ROKH womenswear has honed a clean elegance all his own.
The designers will show a new collection to the jury come Friday, June 6, 2018 at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in front of a panel of LVMH designers, which includes Maria Grazia Chiuri, Karl Lagerfeld, and Nicolas Ghesquière among other revered names.END
