With rumors of a Rihanna lingerie line swirling (from the same company that produces Kate Hudson’s Fabletics line), CR looks back on Rihanna’s runway debut—a scantly-clad slip dress moment for Dsquared2’s Spring/Summer 2018 show.
Known for theatrical runway events, the brand’s September 2017 catwalk was designed to look like an auto repair shop. “You can be rich, you can be poor, but we all have car trouble,” brother designers Dean and Dan Caten, said at the time. “Today it’s going to happen to Rihanna.”
Pulling up in a muscle car, a then-19-year-old Rihanna opened the show with a tuxedoed male model acting as her chauffeur. Getting out of the car, her hair was in a messy yet chic updo, her makeup done with Fellini-era cat-eyes and chandelier earrings.
Her song “Shut Up and Drive” played in the background as she ran her hands over the car, then tossed a mechanic her keys and began to pound the runway as the titular lyrics pumped through the speakers. The dress, a black babydoll that accentuated her decolletage, was short in front with a long hem flitting behind her as she walked.
Later, at the end of the show, she came out with Dean and Dan in a long, bright plum halter gown bejeweled at the neck as her song “Umbrella” played, having made the rounds as a mega summer hit just months before. “The audience cheered, Rihanna looked fabulous,” wrote famed fashion critic Cathy Horyn.
The Dsquared2 show was Rihanna’s runway debut. The Catens later named a shoe after her, the Riri sandal, in honor of her time on their Spring/Summer 2008 runway. Rihanna owns the runway in a different way now, of course, with her wildly successful Fenty x Puma collection and new beauty line. Our fingers are crossed for that lingerie line as well.END
