When two visionaries come together, dreams become reality. Such is the case with legendary designer Rei Kawakubo and hair artist extraordinaire Julien d’Ys, who have been collaborating on Comme des Garçons shows for over 30 years now. Every season, Kawakubo gives d’Ys a cryptic one or tw-word prompt that captures her collection, then his instincts and imagination kick in.
Speaking exclusively with CR Fashion Book, the elusive Japanese designer described her Spring/Summer 2018 lineup as “sculptural graffiti.” The deliriously layered sartorial sculptures―adorned with magpie embellishments like Hello Kitty figurines―combine 16th century influences with 60th century futurism.
The iconoclastic d’Ys, who is responsible for cutting Linda Evangelista’s career-making bob in 1988, is prolific beyond hair and beauty. He rigorously documents every element of his creative process by filling hundreds of carnet notebooks with his sketches, poetry, and other scraps of inspiration. In recent years, d’Ys has increasingly focused on painting and photography.
Carine tapped d’Ys to take us inside his world for the new issue of CR Fashion Book. Below, he shares his exclusive images and illustrations of Comme des Garçons’ Spring/Summer 2018 collection.
