The ongoing discussion of who may or may not be replacing Donatella Versace became a little more complicated this morning when a rumor broke that Kim Jones is now in the running to be the Italian brand’s creative director. WWD reports that Versace is eyeing Louis Vuitton Kim menswear designer Kim Jones for the job.
This comes as quite a surprise to everyone who assumed Riccardo Tisci was a shoe-in for the job after he left Givenchy. Jones, a dark horse in this race, is a graduate of Central Saint Martins, and could do wonders to modernize the Italian brand—he was, after all, the guy behind Vuitton’s Supreme collaboration.
That being said, Tisci still seems like the best man for the job. For one thing, his design aesthetic fits quite neatly into the Versace we know today. Additionally, he has experience crafting both ready-to-wear and couture collections, so he could handle the different tiers of the label (Jones does not have experience in womenswear at all, let alone couture). Finally, he and Donatella are very close; he even tapped her for a Givenchy campaign, and Versace has always been about family.
WWD noted that no contract has been signed, and that Jones recently renewed his employment contract with Vuitton last year. So this could just be a rumor. Or he could, indeed, be part of a growing list of potential designers (which also includes Virgil Abloh). Of course, Donatella herself has not made a formal announcement that she is stepping down any time soon. Is this all a lot of speculation? Yes. But it wouldn’t be fashion month without a flurry of rumors about designers swapping jobs.
