START bodyAs Planned Parenthood confronts defunding under the recently passed GOP health care bill, the fate of women’s health in America is in jeopardy. Ever since Donald Trump was elected president in November 2016, the fashion industry has rallied together to draw attention to the 2.5 million men and women who visit Planned Parenthood clinics across the country every year. They come for breast examination and cervical screenings, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases and infections, contraception and family planning.
Over the past nine months, designers like Diane von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, and Sophie Theallet have been drumming up support for the cause in the media and have all publicly refused to dress First Lady, Melania Trump. Today, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler have added their names to the fray. The duo has launched a PSA film, titled A Film for Planned Parenthood of New York City.
Directed by Harley Weir, the short addresses what it means to be female in today’s political climate, while also highlighting many of the issues faced by women and many members of the LGBQT community every day. It’s an intimate portrayal of shared sisterhood and features a range of activists, artists, sex educators, models, and friends of the designers. Some of the more well-known cast members include Amber Valletta, Hari Nef, Jemima Kirke, Paloma Elesser, Stella Tennant, Grimes, and Hanne Gabby Odiele.
Speaking in a statement, Jack and Lazaro explained how they felt compelled to use their platform as internationally recognized designers to help raise awareness and activate change. “In recent monnths, Proenza Schouler has been driven by a need to stand up with organizations that fight for the causes we believe in,” they said collectively. “Planned Parenthood means so much to the women who work at our company, and to the community Planned Parenthood serves in New York City and beyond.”
