In tandem with the launch of this year’s Art Basel, Jonathan Anderson has unveiled a new exhibition at Loewe’s Miami store. Titled Chance Encounters II, the show is centered around the work of two seminal contemporary artists: Irish painter William McKeown and British potter, John Ward. Known for his romantic watercolor compositions, McKeown’s estate has contributed 15 paintings to hang on the walls of the store which have been decorated with bespoke wallpaper depicting cuckoo birds designed by the artist before his death in 2011. Amongst the works included by Ward are 40 small-scale, hand-crafted, characteristically matte pots and vessels, which Anderson personally selected to contrast with the store’s dramatically high ceilings and imported 18th Century Portuguese stone.
Since he was named creative director of the Spanish house in 2013, Anderson has been slowly molding Loewe into a more inclusive lifestyle brand with a heavy focus on artisanal arts. The Miami store initially opened as an contemporary art gallery late last year and hosted an exhibition showcasing the work of major British artists like Lucie Rie and Rose Wylie, under the same “Chance Encounters” title.
Chance Encounters II runs from the 30th November to 31st March, 2016 at Loewe Miami Design District, 110 NE 39th Street.
