In a display of practical logic that’s somewhat unusual in the fashion industry, Monse and Oscar de la Renta have announced plans to host back-to-back shows in the same venue during New York Fashion Week. The decision comes from Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, who act as co-creative directors of both brands after taking on the role at de la Renta in addition to designing Monse in September 2016. This season will mark their first collection for the storied house and their fourth at Monse Maison.
Today, Garcia confirmed to Business of Fashion that the dual showing will take place at 6.30pm on February 13th in Skylight Clarkson Square. He cited a desire to cut costs and time as the deciding factors behind the move, but said that measures are in place to clearly differentiate each brand’s showing to ensure that the audience does not become confused.
“We wanted to attack it head on: Can we do two different collections that have an identity on their own and be brave enough to show them together?,” he said to BoF. “Having them be consecutive does not mean that there is necessarily a blending of the ideas. There’s going to be different styling for each show, and it going to be very apparent where the change happens. The clothes are very different.”
While the back-to-back listing is certainly unconventional, it’s a refreshingly modern approach to the logistics of the Fashion Week calendar, which has been much maligned in recent times. The decision also speaks to Kim and Garcia’s confidence as designers—which is merited given that tickets to both shows are likely to be amongst the most sought-after at NYFW.
