Over the past year, Grammy Award-winning artist The Weeknd, otherwise known as Abel Tesfaye, has embodied various personas during his After Hours album era. From nose bleeds to bandaged faces, the world watched as The Weekend flaunted looks that depict a unique storytelling narrative of his music through wardrobe – and now, the CR MEN Issue 10 star gets to try his creative hand at the big screen.

Co-created with Sam Levinson creator of HBO’s smash hit Euphora and L.A. nightlife entrepreneur Reza Fahim, Tesfaye is set to star, co-write, and executive produce the series titled The Idol following a female pop star who sparks a romance with an enigmatic L.A. nightclub owner.

Lily-Rose Depp has been announced in a leading role, believed to be the female pop star, along with an all star cast. Joining Depp and Tesfaye on screen the ensemble includes pop star Troye Sivan, Suzanna Son, and Steve Zissis as series regulars. Melanie Liburd, Tunde Adebimpe, Elizabeth Berkley Lauren, Nico Hiraga, and Anne Heche have also joined the cast in reoccurring roles.

Also announced, Atlanta’s Amy Seimetz is set to direct all of the six episodes green-lit.

The writer’s room isn’t a new environment for Tesfaye. Previously, he co-wrote an episode of TBS’s animated comedy American Dad titled “A Starboy is Born” alongside Robot Chicken‘s Joel Hurwitz. The “Blinding Lights” singer additionally had a cameo role in the Safdie Brothers’ 2019 film Uncut Gems produced by A24 entertainment company which also produces Euphoria. Though few details have been released, the cocktail of Levinson’s unbridled raw filmmaking style and The Weeknd’s hypnotically dark and sexy musical production is one that’s sure to make our binge watch lineup.
