Oscar winning filmmaker Spike Lee debuted a video in tribute to New York City on Instagram yesterday. His home city has been a backdrop for many of his films, including the critically acclaimed Do the Right Thing. Titled “New York New York,” the short film is dedicated to the people living and working in the city during the coronavirus pandemic.

“My short film—New York New York—is a love letter to its people,” Lee posted on Thursday. “Plain and simple.”

The video consists of montages of the city from all five boroughs–Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx–accompanied by Frank Sinatra’s classic tune “New York, New York.” Filming on a Super 8 across the largely empty city, Lee highlights New York institutions such as the Statue of Lady Liberty, Coney Island’s Wonder Wheel, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Towards the end of the video, the filmmaker captures what the city’s denizens look like now, featuring people walking wearing masks and medical staff in scrubs outside of hospitals. The film concludes with the Empire State Building lighting up in red to support the healthcare workers across the city.
