Alexander McQueen‘s sartorial art is returning to the cultural conversation in a major way. A documentary about the revolutionary designer is set to premiere this weekend at Tribeca Film Festival and a new trailer builds intrigue through a stunning visual feast.
McQueen, by award-winning director and producer Ian Bonhôte, will explore the late eponymous designer’s daring work and personal struggles through interviews with family and friends, footage of his runway spectacles, and a deeper look at archival pieces. His artful oeuvre earned him four British Fashion Awards for Designer of the Year and became the subject of a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art just a year after his tragic passing. Needless to say, the fashion genius’ short yet accomplished life generates significant curiosity.
Through 30 seconds of dramatic clips, Bonhôte and filmmaker Peter Ettedgui do nothing, but magnify that interest. With background music that’s reminiscent of horror or blockbuster movie scores, the imagery includes artful skulls and flashing lights amidst clips of his collection premieres, which were more theatrical than your run-of-the-mill runway shows. Words like “legend,” “provocateur,” and “genius” are interspersed throughout , reminding viewers of McQueen’s impact. It ends with a voice saying, “No one discovered Alexander McQueen. McQueen discovered himself,” as golden, armor-like designs overtake an image of the iconic designer’s face.
Fashion documentaries regularly make an impact, but McQueen will likely be one of the more memorable ones. The film balances aesthetic with investigation, promising to make the world remember why Lee Alexander earned his reputation as a contemporary genius, as well as gain a deeper understanding into the pressure and internal torture he endured throughout his career.
McQueen premieres Sunday, April 22 at Tribeca Film Festival and tickets are available online.
