Explore the Intricate Wonderland of Guo Pei’s Designs

It takes a special quality for a designer to create work so stunning it moves beyond the ephemeral, commercial nature of fashion to achieve the rank of art. On the heels of an identically named exhibit at the Savannah College of Art & Design, Skira Rizzoli’s Guo Pei: Couture Beyond argues that its titular Chinese couturier has earned her place alongside the likes of Alexander McQueen thanks to the intricate grandeur of her collections.

The designer burst onto Western radars when she dressed Rihanna for the 2015 Met Gala, so naturally, the majestic yellow dress received a six-photo spread at the beginning. But if the book has anything to prove, it’s that Pei’s designs are just as captivating when her celebrity clients, which also include Chinese actresses Li Bingbing and Zhang Ziyi, are absent. Each garment has a star quality all its own thanks to its ornate beaded embroidery and gravity-defying structure.

Lynn Yaeger’s opening words say the designer provides “the once-in-a-lifetime experience of wearing a gown of spun sugar that seems to have tumbled from the pages of a fairy tale.” The book’s photos, captured by Howl Collective, attempt to show this through full look images and stunning detail shots interspersed with imaginative visions of Pei’s creations in majestic natural settings. The former allows a deep look into the detailed nature of the Chinese couturier’s craft, while the latter encourages viewers to dream and proves her designs’ grandeur holds as much magic as the stunning scenery. It’s a chic, modern day Alice in Wonderland of sorts, teeming with imperial influence and unapologetic glamour.

Through an intimate look at Guo Pei, the celebratory book shows the transcendent power of the traditional Chinese grandeur she brings into her designs. Pei is showing the world the magic she can create by mixing her roots with a healthy dose of imagination and expert craft.
