Being dubbed “The Girl Everybody Stares At” is no small feat, but it still doesn’t completely encapsulate the impact of Veruschka. Born Vera Gottliebe Anna Gräfin von Lehndorff-Steinort on May 14, 1939, Veruschka grew up in the midst of World War II-torn Prussia to a countess mother and aristocrat father. At her peak she was earning ,000 per day—an unprecedented wage at the time—setting the precedent for decades of top-tier models to come. On the supermodel’s birthday, CR curates candid flicks and vintage gems from before she changed her industry forever.
