START

Take a note from the most iconic stars of yesterday-quite literally. Words to Live By is a compilation of the most memorable quotes from Old Hollywood on love, style, life, and more.

One of the most influential women involved in the civil rights movement in the ’60s, Ella Baker was a crucial member of many activist groups, from youth coalitions to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She grew up hearing stories from her grandmother, Josephine Elizabeth Ross, about the oppressive culture of slaves and life as an African American woman. These would help shape Baker’s knowledge of the injustices that African Americans face in society and motivate her own activism. Alongside Martin Luther King Jr., she helped form the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to search for nonviolent ways to fight for the African American community. Right until her death in 1986, Baker continued to mentor many other emerging activists, from Rosa Parks to Diane Nash, who built upon her legacy. Click through to revisit Baker’s history-shaking words on freedom, leadership, and challenging the rules.
