From the Archive: Mercedes-Benz

START

From the creation of the first official Mercedes-Benz vehicle in 1926 to now, owning one of the brand’s vehicles has been a status symbol for celebrities and luxury-fanatics alike. The company, known as “the best or nothing,” has consistently boasted top-selling premium vehicles around the world. This is due in part to its strong history, which extends over 30 years before 1926 when founders Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz were competitors. Daimler co-founded automotive company Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in 1890, and Benz, who had owned several automotive-related companies since the 1880s, opened the car manufacturing company Carl Benz Söhne in 1906. In the aftermath of World War I, many businesses faced financial losses and sought to merge or form partnerships. Daimler and Benz ultimately decided that this was the best choice for their automotive companies and merged into Daimler-Benz AG on June 28, 1926. The name Mercedes, which was derived from the name of a vehicle created by DMG in 1901, eventually replaced Daimler’s, establishing the Mercedes-Benz brand name recognized today.

From Grace Kelly to David Bowie, successful entertainment icons have long posed with their Benzes. To honor the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the official Mercedez-Benz company, CR looks back at an array of vintage celebrities and their Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
