Today, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez will step back from their Instagram accounts to allow for various Black leaders and anti-racist organizations to use their platforms and interact directly with their followers. Their announcements yesterday followed a series of posts from both singers and widespread support across the music industry for the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Gaga, who has 42 million followers, posted a photo of her peace sign tattoo and wrote, “starting tomorrow, I’m giving over my Instagram account to each of the organizations I’ve recently donated to, in an effort to amplify their important voices.” She added that after the takeover, she will follow through with her efforts and “post stories, content, and otherwise lift up the voices of the countless inspiring members and groups within the Black community.”

Some of the organizations Gaga has donated to include Black Lives Matter, Color of Change, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, which she listed in a recent post, encouraging her followers to learn about them and take action themselves.

Gomez’s platform reaches an even bigger audience of 178 million followers, and the singer posted yesterday that she has “been struggling to know the right things to say to get the word out about this important moment in history,” but that “after thinking about how best to use my social media, I decided that we all need to hear more from Black voices. Over the next few days I will be highlighting influential leaders and giving them a chance to take over my Instagram so that they can speak directly to all of us.”

Gomez’s post featured a symbolic painting by artist Charly Palmer titled “Speak With Confidence,” which depicts a torn American flag with red paint dripping down over the face of a Black child. “We all have an obligation to do better,” Gomez wrote. “And we can start by listening with an open heart and mind.”
