Cardi B is unapologetically candid about a lot of things, including her politics. The rapper took to social media yesterday to discuss the upcoming presidential election and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, joined by Senator Bernie Sanders on Instagram Live. Cardi has been a Sanders supporter since the 2016 election, endorsing the Democratic candidate on social media.
Their livestream began with an enthusiastic greeting from Cardi, who refers to Sanders as Uncle Bernie, and with Sanders asking the rapper to take a look at his nails. (The pair first met at a Detroit nail salon last summer for an interview in which Cardi asked Sanders some questions that were submitted by her followers.) Cardi, who has blue acrylics on her own fingers, admits that, “They’re looking very quarantine. I can tell you’ve been in quarantine for a while now with those nails. But you know what? It’s OK, Uncle Bernie.”
Sanders recently dropped out of the 2020 presidential primary race, and Cardi expressed how upset she was when she found out. During their Instagram Live, she pressed Sanders on why he is now endorsing Joe Biden. “A lot of people, like the youth, they don’t really rock with Joe Biden because he’s conservative,” she said. “I want you to tell my platform, why are you endorsing him?”
Sanders responded by saying that it was always his intention to support the Democratic candidate if he did not win. “Donald Trump is—in my mind—the most dangerous president in the modern history of America,” Sanders said. “This is a guy who lies all the time. He doesn’t believe in science. He downplayed this whole coronavirus, which has led to the deaths of many thousands of people unnecessarily.”
Cardi and Sanders also touched on the youth vote, criminal justice reform, healthcare, and the unfair burden that COVID-19 places on those most at risk.END
