Known for her stunning features and more famously, her fearless, IDGAF attitude, it’s not surprising Slick Woods is one of today’s most in-demand models. It’s also why Mercedes-Benz tapped her to be a part of its newly minted fashion initiative, harnessing her vision and bringing it onto a global platform. CR caught up with the busy model at Coachella (her first ever!) to talk about what it’s like to be a part of the #mbcollective, how she stays grounded, and what Rihanna’s taught her.
How has your Coachella trip been so far?
It’s my first Coachella. It’s cool, but made me realize I don’t really like being around people that much.
What has been the most exciting project with working with Mercedes?
I am excited about working with Mercedes. I feel like Bob the Builder. I’m very picky about who I want to work with, but when Mercedes calls, you pick up the phone.
Mercedes Benz is all about innovation—how are you a forward thinker?
I am a forward thinker in every way. I pride myself on proving people wrong. It comes from the strength of being fearless enough to not give a fuck. I am always the controversial one in the room. Just like Mercedes, I’m here to change the game.
When do you feel your most creative?
When I’m home and in my element. I live in Brooklyn and sometimes I forget because I am always traveling, so it’s good to come back and get grounded.
What have been your biggest challenges in your career and how have you overcome them?
I am very comfortable with saying what I want to say. Sometimes that leads to losing opportunities. I’m always the bad guy, but like Angelina Jolie said in Girl Interrupted, “I’m playing the villain, baby, just like you wanted.”
How has working as a model in the fashion industry inspired you?
It keeps me fresh. I used to be very closed-minded and now I’m more comfortable switching up my style. Before I used to not want to change anything because I felt like I wasn’t being true to myself.
Rihanna, one of CR‘s cover girls is a leader and role model in a way that is very much her own. How has working with her impacted you?
She has inspired me to open up more as a woman. She’s inspired a lot of change in my life for the better. She was a big part of helping me understand what’ it’s like to grow up in the spotlight. She’s never handed me anything on a silver platter and say, ‘Take it,’ but she’d put something on the table and say, ‘You can take this, but I’m also going to teach you how to use this.’
Another great voice in fashion and in culture is Kanye West. How has your life changed since doing Yeezy?
Kanye was my first job. He really set the bar for how this shit was going to be. I thought everything was just going to come to me right after that, but it’s been a very humbling experience, because even after Yeezy, I still had to work really hard and earn everything I have.
What do you stand for as a person?
I stand for clarity. I stand for respect. I stand for loyalty to self. I stand for love.
What is the best advice you can give to people who look up to you?
Don’t look up to anyone. As soon as you do, you put yourself in a smaller place.
Let’s talking about the future—where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I don’t do goals. If you set your bar for the sky, you can’t go to space. I don’t really believe in goals. I just want to live in the moment.
