Whatever fashion bubble you live in, chances are you’ve probably heard about the “fight of the century” taking place this Saturday between the undefeated boxing great, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, and Irish UFC star Conor McGregor.
Both fighters are well-known peacocks―sartorially speaking―and personal style has played a major role in their jousting and smack talking in the months of hype leading up to the big event.
McGregor set the tone by wearing a custom “Fuck You” suit (the phrase was repeated in a pinstripe pattern) when the match was first announced. Earlier this month, he turned up at a press conference in a custom Versace robe (emblazoned with “McGregor The Notorious”) gifted to him by Donatella herself. “You’ve got to know Donatella to get that,” he bragged to reporters. The designer returned the love by posting a video of McGregor captioned, “Hope my robe brings you luck!”
Yesterday, Mayweather fired back with a fashionable counterpunch when designer Philipp Plein announced a new, two-year collaboration with the boxing legend via Instagram. The partnership officially kicks off Saturday, when Mayweather will enter the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas wearing a custom boxing robe and trunks by Plein. His support crew will also be dressed by the designer, and the brand will release a limited-edition capsule at its Vegas flagship store on Friday night―just after the fighters weigh in.
The athletic industry is oversaturated with endorsements by sportswear giants like Nike and Adidas, so it’s fun to see high fashion designers getting in on the game for a change. Considering both fighters stand to take home hundreds of millions―regardless of who is the champion―we’d say it’s a win-win situation for all involved.
