Spring’s most in-demand luxury skincare ingredient might surprise you—it’s not powdered diamonds, liquid gold, or even bee venom. It’s an ingredient you may not be familiar with and will most likely find stomach-turning. We’ll cut to the chase: the new must-have beauty ingredient is snail mucus.
In a report from Business of Fashion, cosmetic ingredient supplier Croda stated that brands cannot get enough of the slimy stuff. (Croda is the second largest supplier of raw beauty ingredients in the world.) They say that snail slime is particularly desired in South Korea and China, where the ingredient is believed to have incredible anti-aging effects. As well as being a potent moisturizer, snail slime is also thought to act as a natural sun block, and it can help prevent infection.
Croda has teamed up with another supplier, Clariant, in order to help satisfy the increasing demand for snail slime in Asia with more sustainably sourced materials. The two companies have begun an effort to harvest ingredients from the Amazon rainforest last year. Exactly how one extracts slime from a snail remains unclear, but in this case, perhaps ignorance is bliss.END
