Within the past year, TikTok has become a hub for trends, beauty, and skincare. While everyone has been stuck at home since the start of the pandemic, more people have had free time to use TikTok, resulting in the app’s popularity. From beauty trends like the 70s Farrah Fawcett hair to the heatless sock curls trend, and with everyone having more time to spend scrolling through the app and creating TikTok videos, so many beauty trends have emerged.
One beauty trend that has taken over the app tremendously is sugar waxing. Our TikTok feed has practically been bombarded with do-it-yourself sugar waxing videos, detailing how to create the wax, how to apply it, and the benefits of sugaring. Sugar wax is easy to use, can be good for your skin, and it only takes three ingredients to make it: sugar, water, and lemon.
There is also a long list of benefits to sugaring instead of regular waxing or shaving including it being less painful, safe for sensitive skin, and low temperature. Sugar wax is also simple to create. All you need is one cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of water, and 1/4 cup of lemon juice, and stir it together, bring it to a boil until it’s golden brown and sticky, and put it in a container to let it set.
While sugar waxing may be a new concept that you have only heard about through TikTok, it has been practiced for centuries with it originating in Persia. The art of sugaring was even practiced by Cleopatra herself and was considered the most effective way to remove hair. The wax was even applied the same way we use it today, with it applied in the direction of the hair growth and pulled off when cool. Because hairless smooth skin was the beauty standard back then, much like it is now, hair removal was very important to the Persians and regularly practiced in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Middle Eastern countries. With the sugar wax trend coming back, retailers and stores like Target and Amazon have started selling sugar wax products. Independent business owners on Etsy and TikTok have also hopped on the trend, selling sugar wax for those who cannot create it.
With millions of users on the popular app, trends on TikTok are huge. Everyone seems to be trying to get into the latest beauty, fashion, and food trends on the app. The sugar wax trend seems to be one that has been consistent on the app and actually works and is good for your skin! While 2021 has seen a whole new set of beauty trends on TikTok, sugar waxing is definitely one of our favorites!END
