How to Get Oscar de la Renta’s Red Lips and Sleek Ponytails for F/W 2020

“In fashion you have a black dress, in makeup you have red lips,” makeup artist Tom Pecheux says backstage at the Oscar de la Renta Fall/Winter 2020 show. While there were several of the former in Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia’s collection (including a version of Scarlett Johansson’s Oscar’s dress from this past Sunday), there was an abundance of the latter. The timeless beauty look was carried throughout the lineup of playfully sophisticated designs, with each model sporting a bright red pout.

To keep the focus on the lips, Pecheux, who used Mac Makeup to achieve the look, kept the rest of the face clean with a soft matte no-makeup makeup look. After using Mac’s Studio Fix Soft Matte Foundation Stick, the artist applied a subtle contour to the cheeks, and a touch of the Strobe Face Glaze in Bronzejour (being released in the spring) to the eyes, leaving the lashes sans mascara but with a defined curl. For the lips, Pecheux created dimension by first swiping on the Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Feels So Grand at the center, then blending the shade Quite the Standout on the rest of the lip to give them an orangey-red tone. To make them shine, the Patent Lip Lacquer in Red Enamel was painted on as the finishing touch.

Pops of color were used throughout the collection, adding a liveliness much welcomed by winter fashion. With Disney’s Fantasia as one of the points of inspiration, the designers added whimsy with color-blocked daywear, bubble hem satin dresses, and gowns sequined with what looked like a shower of stars. Pecheux wanted to play off of these vibrant designs for the makeup look.

“The entire collection reads joy, happiness–that’s what I love about Laura and Feranando,” Pecheux tells CR. Especially in this collection, it takes you to a happy winter. You look at the collection and you say, ‘Wow it’s going to be a fucking good winter.’ In their work, in their joy, there is always sophistication no matter what, and I thought red lipstick is like an iconic song of joy.”

To finish off the timeless beauty, hairstylist Odile Gilbert decided to stay consistent center-parted straight, low ponytails throughout. Gilbert used Tresemmé products to create the sleek, minimal look, beginning by blow drying the models’ hair with the Keratin Smooth Heat Protectant Spray, flat ironing it, and spritzing the Compressed Micro Mist Level 4 Hair Spray for hold. Gilbert then smoothed the hair back into a tight, low ponytail and finished it with the Keratin Smooth Shine Serum for added luster. To create the uniform look among all the models, Gilbert had a pro-tip up her sleeve: “We tell the model to uncross her legs and look at her phone, to make sure [the hair] is really low on the neck, so when she [stands up] it’s still very smooth.”
