As far as we know, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.
Five years ago, Giovanni Delgado met Kacey Musgraves while working at a salon in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then, he’s been the hands behind the country singer’s lustrous head of hair. With a background doing beauty and fashion styling, Delgado’s creative eye ultimately translated to his passion for hair, which he isn’t afraid to play around with. From bombshell blowouts to tinsel-strewn tresses, Delgado has transformed Musgraves’ locks into many envy-inducing looks that always put long, silky hair front and center.
Here, Delgado shares the story behind Musgraves’ jeweled Met Gala after party hair, what Old Hollywood star they get beauty inspo from, and the best products a healthy mane.
What is one of your favorite looks you’ve done?
“One of my favorite looks with Kacey was her Met Gala look where I turned her into a Barbie. Jeremy Scott sent over some pictures of that look and I was obsessed–we obviously had to do blonde hair. I got two wigs and put them together with color, toned, and set them. To get those really pretty Barbie curls and waves, we did an old school curler set on the wig, so everything rolled under and then the top part rolled back. We brushed it out and popped it on her, and she was ready to go.
That day we did two looks–there was that look and then right after that we took the wig off and slicked her hair up and did this big, jumbo twisted ponytail. We did that for the after party. It was a really fast turn around so it was a lot of pressure, but it ended up looking so amazing. We were really inspired the ‘70s, but also by the ‘90s because we’re ‘90s babies. There was one doll that had a bunch of gems in her hair. [Kacey] had it growing up and my sister did too, so I clearly remember it. We were like, ‘Let’s do that, let’s put the fucking gems in your hair.’ It was so fun because it mimicked the outfit, too.”
Kacey has had some amazing wig moments. How can other people experiment with them?
“Wigs are a really good way to give your hair a break, especially if you’re someone who’s styling their hair a lot. Topper wigs, which go on top of your hair, are easier to wear for the regular girl. It’s basically a piece you put on top of your hair, and you style it and blend it in with your hair. It’s super unnoticeable because you use your front hairline to blend it out. That’s one of the easier ones, but it’s really awesome for changing your look. I recently did this longer bob on Kacey–I dyed a wig smokey brown. We were obsessing over how in the ‘70s the brown tones were so smokey, and it’s almost like a greyish-brown. It turned out super cute. [A wig] is a really good way to change your look super easily, and you can just take it off at the end of the day, or you can rock it for a week and leave your hair untouched and beautiful without cutting it or damaging it with color.”
How do you decide how to mix up her hair look?
“For references, I always look at Studio 54 pictures. I look back at people like Emmylou Harris, Cher, Crystal Gayle (the country artist), Jerry Hall. As of late, it’s been Sophia Loren. We’ve been really obsessed with that vintage ‘70s, sexy Italian woman. That’s how we started doing the bang, because we were inspired by that era.”
What are your go-to products?
“My main priority with Kacey is how I keep her hair looking so shiny and healthy. We’ve been on the go so much this past year, so I have to watch out for her hair and use really conditioning products. One of my favorites is the Leonor Greyl Condition Naturelle. It’s a heat protectant styling spray. I also love their Serum de Soie Sublimateur. After heat styling so much, your hair can get brittle on the ends, so you have to protect it and keep those ends really sealed, and that serum is really amazing for that. For the Missoni waves–it’s the kind of beachy waves that we do–I use Playa spray for separation. If you ever want a beachy look, you spray that once you’re done adding waves to your hair and it adds really awesome texture. It’s super playful. You just shake it out and it looks amazing. We also really love hair masks. We have this one that I use on her once or twice a week by David Mallett. It’s the Mask No. 3.”
